MyCiti bus G409 has caught fire on Nelson Mandela Boulevard near Hospital Bend and officers are currently diverting traffic onto Main road.

Firefighters were called out to the scene just before 5pm. The bus is situated on the incoming lane on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, and two fire engines, a rescue vehicle and 12 staff members were dispatched.

N2 incoming is closed and traffic is now being diverted onto the M3 outgoing. The M3 incoming is closed onto Woolsack Drive, a further road closure will be put in place on the N2 onto Mowbray Main.

Firefighters on the scene are utilising two fog jets to contain the fire. No passengers were on board when the fire started and the driver managed to escape the bus without injury.

The fire reportedly started from the engine compartment and quickly engulfed the whole bus. There is no information available currently as to what caused the fire.

In a separate incident earlier today, a Golden Arrow bus caught alight in Cape Town CBD.
