A strange, miniature bronze statue with a message has survived two days on top of Lion’s Head.
The statue, bearing a strong resemblance to president Jacob Zuma, mysteriously appeared at the top of the popular hiking destination over the past weekend. Posted underneath was a plaque bearing the message ‘If a criminal like this can get a statue, so can I – JZ’.
Controversy is never far away when it comes to depicting the nation’s leader and this statue was no different. A sex toy had been placed in the statues hand, in a pose strikingly similar to Cape Town artist Brett Murray’s The Spear.

It is unclear if the statue is related to the ongoing saga of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at UCT, but likely assumptions can be made about the bronze figurine’s message.

On Monday morning the statue was found to have been broken in half. Nobody seems to know who erected the statue or why it was there, but it’s clear as daylight that somebody really wanted to have their art noticed, albeit in semi-bad taste.
