The N1 between Touwsriver and De Doorns remains closed due to a truck carrying nitric acid, a non-flammable but highly corrosive acid, that overturned on the Hex River Pass in the direction of De Doorns on the evening of 17 November 2022.

The Fire Services of the Cape Winelands District (CWDM) and the Breede Valley Municipalities (BVM) have confirmed that progress is being made to pump the gas from the overturned tanker into a new tanker to be removed from the scene so that the road may be opened.
The highly skilled teams will continue with the clean-up operations, which are likely to take most of the day.
This kind of incident demands a cautious and well-thought-out approach to ensure the safety of the operational personnel crew. All those on the scene have been trained in managing this kind of incident.
Commuters and truckers are advised to find alternative routes.
