Najwa Petersen has been denied parole for a second time, the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board confirmed, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Petersen is serving a 28-year sentence after a court found she organised the killing of her husband, music and theatre legend Taliep Petersen, in 2006.
EWN reports that she became eligible for parole after serving the required portion of her sentence.
Taliep Petersen was shot in his Athlone home on 16 December 2006. His death left a deep mark on Cape Town’s arts community and on his family.
This is the second time Petersen has applied for release in just over a year. The Department of Correctional Services confirmed the board’s decision, saying it followed the prescribed review process (JacarandaFM).
Family members and local groups have made repeated representations to officials since the case first came before parole panels. Those representations led to a referral and close scrutiny of earlier parole decisions.
The board did not publish full reasons for the denial. Legal experts said parole decisions weigh risk, rehabilitation and victims’ views.
The matter remains sensitive in Athlone and across South Africa’s arts sector.
