A Cape Town nanny accused of abusing the infant she was tasked to care for, along with stealing items from the home of her employers, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, and is now out on a bail of R1 000.

As reported by News24, Prosecutor Nicky Konisi said that a consultation with the baby boy’s mother is yet to be conducted.

“The accused was a nanny and was caught on camera abusing the 5-month-old baby,” she said.

The State is reported to still be waiting for the footage, and the incident took place in December 2018.

The nanny stands accused of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as the footage, which has become a viral video, shows her shaking, hitting and dropping the infant. It is also alleged that the woman stole Pampers diapers, earphones, sunglasses, and books from the baby’s family.

Her bail was extended, and she is expected to appear in court again on March 20.
