Western Cape teachers excelled at the 24th National Teaching Awards, which were presented in Boksburg this morning, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The Awards, which coincide with World Teachers’ Day on 5 October each year, celebrates teaching excellence across the country. Two of Western Cape educators were named winners, with another two ranking in the top three in their areas.
The Kader Asmal Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Derek Swart Paarl Boys’ High School.

Swart has been at the helm of the school for over two decades where his leadership style is characterised by, ‘inclusivity, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence’ according to the WCED’s motivation for his nomination. ‘Under his guidance, the school has consistently achieved outstanding academic results, maintaining a reputation as one of the top-performing schools in the country.’
Ethon Leigh Alexander won the Excellence in Teaching Mathematics Award.
He is the deputy principal at Fraaisig Primary School in Knysna, where he teaches Grade 7 mathematics.
‘His unwavering dedication to enhancing the quality of education has made a significant impact on both learners and educators alike,’ stated the WCED. ‘As the head of Learning and Teaching Support Material at the school, he oversees the procurement, distribution, and management of educational resources.’

Meanwhile, Chadwin Bagley from Strand’s Rusthof School won second place in the Excellence in Special Needs Teaching category, and Bernic van Blerk from Vredenberg High School finished third in the Physical Sciences (FET) category.
‘We congratulate them on this outstanding achievement, which is a testament to the incredible work these teachers do every day,’ said Provincial Minister for Education, David Maynier.
‘We thank all of the teachers of the Western Cape.’
