Approximately 600 people have been left homeless following a devasting fire that cut through the informal settlement of Masiphumelele Informal Settlement in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Close to 15 firefighting vehicles made their way to the informal settlement around 1am, to find nearly 100 shacks on fire Masemola Street. The settlement is located between Fish Hoek and Kommetjie, reports Times Live.
The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue services are now working hard to determine the cause of the blaze. Humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers has stepped up to assist where they can but is urging the public to help those who have been left destitute, as per EWN.
“Gift of the Givers teams are preparing hot nutritious meals which will be delivered at noon. These will be accompanied by bottled water, blankets and baby care packs as an initial intervention. Our vehicles are packed and ready. Gift of the Givers has assisted communities at Masiphumelele on previous occasions,” the NGO stated on their social media account.
