COVID-19 numbers continue to surge in South Africa with the latest statistics revealing that over 13 000 new infections have been confirmed, and 27 more have passed away taking the death toll to over 90 000.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) the numbers on Tuesday, December 7, confirming that 13 147 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. The confirmed total number of cases now sits at 3 051 222, reports ENCA.
Gauteng continues to have the highest number of cases. The NICD has stated that the positivity rate is currently at 24.9% as over 50 000 South Africans have tested for the virus in the same 24-hour cycle.
KwaZulu-Natal is not too far behind with 11%, while the Western Cape sits at 6% and the North West with 5% of new cases, as per IOL.
The NICD will continue to monitor the situation and the implications of the Omicron variant. According to the institute, 383 people have been hospitalised due to the virus, taking the number of patients in hospital due to COVID-19 to over 3 798.
