Following much uncertainty regarding the opening of schools across the nation this week, the Minister of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has released a new gazette detailing an update to the schooling schedule.

The updated phased-in return schedule for educators and pupils is as follows:

– Grades 7 and 12 and Schools of Skills Year 4 return on June 1

– ECD, Grades 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 11 and Schools of Skills Years 2 and 3 as well as schools for learners with severe intellectual disabilities from Grade 1, 2, 3 and 6 including special care centres for learners with severe and profound intellectual disabilities years 1 to 3 will return on July 6.

– Grade 4, 5, 8 and 9 as well as Schools of Skills Year 1 and schools for learners with severe intellectual disabilities Grades 4 and 5 to return on August 3.

Aftercare facilities will also be allowed to open alongside the various grades but must comply with minimum health and safety directions issues for COVID-19.

The Minister, Head of Department and other delegated officials reserve the right to monitor schools compliance with conditions set for reopening and managing schools on an ongoing basis.

Amid the delay in response and uncertainty, Western Cape schools decided to go ahead with reopening on June 1, despite the lack of communication from the Department.
