Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is South Africa’s largest, and it plays an important role in supporting residents and communities during fires and other emergencies.
The new organisation, led by the Chief Fire Officer (CFO), will enable more efficient and effective decision-making.
The old arrangement required all workers to report directly to the CFO, including support divisions such as clothing and medical stores, technical services, and planning and logistics.

With the new structure, Wayne Okkers and Craig Cyster have been appointed as Deputy Chief Fire Officers.
Staff who previously held the rank of ‘Head’ in the service are now Assistant Chief Fire Officers (ACFOs).
Planning, logistics, and technical services have been combined into a single unit, complete with its own ACFO.
‘Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is a source of pride in our city, and we are constantly looking at new ways to further increase efficiencies and improved service delivery,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith. ‘This new structure is designed to help the service move into the future and stay on par with the latest developments in the emergency response environment. I want to wish the team well, but also remind them that the task ahead is daunting. Forward planning, resourcing and skills development are critical to dealing with the ever-changing urban environment and the growing risks that come with it.’
