Pursuing postgraduate studies in psychology can be fulfilling and emotionally demanding. To support students who are navigating academic pressure, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is launching a Free Online Mental Health Support Group for Psychology Postgraduate Students and those applying for a Master’s in Psychology.
The Support Group aims to create a safe and encouraging space where postgraduate students can connect, share experiences and discuss challenges unique to their personal academic and career journey.
The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, 1 July 2025, at 6:30pm, and every second Tuesday of the month thereafter. Meetings will be hosted via Zoom, ensuring easier accessibility for students across the country.
‘I understand the intense academic and emotional pressure faced by those pursuing this career path,’ says Support Group Leader, Elsa. ‘As an honours student, I have observed firsthand how students dedicate themselves to helping others, yet often struggle with academic pressures, discouragement and lack of support systems.’

Postgraduate Psychology students often juggle demanding workloads while managing their own emotional well-being. This Support Group recognises the unique challenges psychology students face, not only academically but also in managing their emotional well-being while preparing for demanding career paths.
The Group will provide a judgement-free space where members can share experiences on self-care, academic motivation and the pressures of postgraduate studies.
‘I want to create a space where students could learn from each other, have a safe outlet to express their struggles and create positive connections with like-minded people – whether through sharing experiences, laughter or even a good cry,’ explains Elsa.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining the group, please contact Elsa on 065 962 6348.
