Motorists travelling into Cape Town via the N2 may want to think twice before slipping into the bus lane.
Social media users are reporting that the old bus lane enforcement cameras positioned beneath the N2 overpasses have been replaced with brand-new units that are now fully operational.
According to a post shared by a local Facebook user, the upgraded cameras are capable of detecting motorists who illegally use the dedicated bus lane, with offenders reportedly facing fines of R1 500.
While the claim has gained traction online, no official announcement has yet been issued confirming the installation of the new cameras or the enforcement process.
The dedicated bus lane is reserved for authorised public transport vehicles during designated operating times, helping buses move more efficiently through peak-hour traffic. Motorists who enter the lane without permission risk being penalised if caught violating the rules.
If the reports are accurate, drivers who have become accustomed to the older cameras may no longer be able to assume they are inactive.
With traffic volumes increasing on one of Cape Town’s busiest commuter routes, authorities continue to rely on camera technology to improve compliance and keep public transport moving.
