A case of child abandonment is being investigated after a newborn baby was found in a dustbin in the Casino Road park in Plumstead earlier this week.

On Monday morning, vagrants were looking through discarded items in a bin when they made a surprising discovery.

“According to reports, two vagrants were scratching in a bin in the park when they came across a bag in which a baby boy was found. They immediately stopped a passerby/neighbour who took the baby and contacted the ambulance services,” police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said in a statement.

The baby reportedly survived the ordeal despite spending hours in the dustbin and received attention on scene before being transported to the hospital for further medical care.

“A case of child abandonment under the Child Care Act was registered at Diep River police station. The investigation is ongoing at this stage,” said Van Wyk.

Members of the public are being urged to come forward with any information they may have regarding the abandoned baby. Health Department spokesperson, Mark van der Heever, told IOL that a baby boy was admitted to Mowbray Maternity Hospital and that he could not comment on the child’s condition.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call Detective Sergeant Nxanxashe on 082 334 8348 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
