The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) has issued an important advisory to motorists regarding planned night-time closures of the N1 Huguenot Tunnel, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This measure will facilitate critical permanent repair works stemming from the unfortunate bus fire incident that occurred on 3 October 2025.
While emergency repairs were promptly executed and concluded on 9 October, allowing the tunnel to reopen for safe usage, more extensive and lasting repairs are now deemed necessary.
Sanral says that to minimise disruption to motorists, these repairs will be scheduled during the night on selected weekdays, a period identified for having historically lower traffic volumes.
‘It is estimated that less than 10% of the traffic throughout the tunnel will be affected during these planned closures, which aim to ensure both the efficiency of the repair process and the safety of road users,’ Sanral said.

The repair work comes at an opportunistic time, coinciding with the reopening of the R101 (Du Toitskloof Pass) on 10 November 2025.
This alternative route, which adds approximately 11km to the journey, provides a safe and convenient bypass while the tunnel is closed.
This redundancy in routes is particularly beneficial, as the Du Toitskloof Pass had been undergoing its own construction works from 1 September to 10 November 2025, limiting viable alternatives during that time.
Motorists should prepare for full tunnel closures from 9pm to 6am on the following nights:
- Wednesday, 12 November 2025
- Thursday, 13 November 2025
- Tuesday, 18 November 2025
- Wednesday, 19 November 2025
- Thursday, 20 November 2025
- Tuesday, 25 November 2025
- Wednesday, 26 November 2025
- Thursday, 27 November 2025
During these periods, the tunnel will be completely closed to traffic. Motorists are strongly advised to utilise alternative routes, particularly the Du Toitskloof Pass, to prevent inconvenience.
To further aid drivers, Variable Message Signs (VMS) near the tunnel have also been activated, providing timely notifications and reminders of the scheduled night-time closures.
