Several parts of Cape Town are bracing for hours-long water outages this week as the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate carries out essential maintenance and infrastructure work.
Residents across suburbs and towns, from Durbanville to Khayelitsha, have been urged to prepare for temporary supply interruptions spanning from Monday through Thursday, as reported by The South African.
The longest shutdown will affect areas including Durbanville, Klipheuwel, Fisantekraal, Wellington, Hermon, and properties along the Voelvlei pipeline. This is due to a planned maintenance shutdown at the Voelvlei Water Treatment Plant on Monday, 30 June, from 8am to 10pm. The City says the closure is necessary to ensure future water security.
In addition, Claremont and Newlands will experience water cuts on Tuesday, 1 July, during a test shutdown in Talana Road, followed by a full outage on Thursday, 3 July, as a new pipeline is linked to existing infrastructure.
Atlantis residents in Saxonsea are also on alert for a full-day water cut on Thursday, 3 July, from 8am to 5pm. Work crews will be replacing ageing pipes and installing valves along several streets in the area.
Zero-pressure testing and condition checks are also scheduled and will disrupt supply in the following areas:
- Tuesday, 1 July: Belmont Park, Eikendal, Kleinbegin, and Summerville (10am–4pm); Mountainside and Strand (9am–8pm)
- Wednesday, 2 July: Kenridge, Durbanville Hills, Vergesig, and Aurora (10am–4pm); Interchange Industrial area (10am–4pm)
- Thursday, 3 July: Khayelitsha High including Litha Park, Harare, Kuyasa (9am–8pm); Mountainside and Gordons Bay (10am–4pm)
The City has advised residents to store enough water in advance and keep taps closed to avoid damage or flooding when water returns.
