The Muslim Cemetery Society of Wynberg has officially closed Constantia Cemetery, located on Strawberry Lane, to new burials. The decision follows an independent assessment confirming the site has reached full capacity.
In a public notice, the Society stated that no additional graves can be accommodated and that the closure takes effect immediately. The only exceptions will be limited reopenings of existing family plots, but only if a close relative was buried there more than 15 years ago. These reburials must comply with strict regulations and require formal approval (VOC).
The society cited legal and environmental compliance as the primary reasons for the closure. Cemetery management has faced increasing pressure in recent years as available space has dwindled and urban development around the area has surged.
‘The cemetery has served the community for generations. We acknowledge the emotional and cultural significance of this site,’ the society said in its statement.
Families affected by the closure are encouraged to consult directly with the society to understand available options.
Alternative burial sites are currently being considered, although no new locations have been confirmed.
The closure reflects broader concerns around burial space shortages across Cape Town.
As the city’s population grows, so does the urgency to find sustainable burial solutions that balance tradition, environmental impacts and spatial constraints.
