Noordhoek’s Open Gardens weekend is making a vibrant return on 18 and 19 October, offering locals and visitors a rare glimpse into 11 private gardens across the valley.
Now in its 11th year, the event is not only a celebration of the Cape floral kingdom but also a fundraiser for On the Verge, a community project dedicated to beautifying Noordhoek’s public spaces.
As highlighted in a release from the Noordhoek community, the initiative goes far beyond petals and pathways. Ticket sales from the event directly support On the Verge, which has spent the past 16 years transforming roadside verges into colourful, thriving spaces.

A community in bloom
Event organiser Kathy Fish, who also founded On the Verge, reflected on how it all began: ‘We live in paradise, and years ago our verges were such an eyesore… I mentioned it to a friend, and she said: ‘Stop talking about it and do something.’ That was the spark for On the Verge.’
Since that spark, the non-profit has created 34 community gardens, planted hundreds of trees, and cleared invasive alien vegetation. Residents are familiar with the team’s bright sign, ‘We are on the verge today’, that pops up on Wednesdays as volunteers prune, plant, and restore Noordhoek’s verges.
In the words of Noordhoek community note, the annual Open Gardens has become ‘a beloved tradition’ for both residents and visitors, combining horticultural beauty with grassroots action.

Young hands, big impact
This year, the event will also see Scouts and Girl Guides stationed at entrances, assisting with ticket sales and welcoming visitors. Fish called their involvement ‘heartwarming’.
‘Their enthusiasm and community spirit remind us why this event matters , it’s about coming together to create something bigger than ourselves,’ he added.
Beyond the chance to explore private gardens, the Noordhoek Open Gardens weekend keeps the valley’s greening efforts alive. Every ticket sold fuels the ongoing work of On the Verge, ensuring Noordhoek’s roadsides and public spaces continue to thrive.
Over the past decade, the event has grown into a seasonal highlight, drawing garden enthusiasts, families, and nature lovers. The 2025 showcase not only provides a weekend of beauty but strengthens the ongoing mission of community pride, sustainability, and collaboration.
As the Noordhoek release noted, every step into a garden is also a step towards ‘Noordhoek’s ongoing story of growth, greening, and community pride.’
