In seeking refuge and assistance after being assaulted by her boyfriend, a woman went to the Brackenfell police station to seek help. In a twisted turn of events, the same authority that was meant to help her, ended up allegedly raping her.
The young woman (26) and her partner had reportedly been having an argument. Things turned explosive and her boyfriend reportedly hit her with a beer bottle, as per IOL.
In a shaken-up state, the woman went to the police station to get help – walking on foot to get there.
She was attended to by a police captain, but whilst trying to explain what had happened, he told her that she was drunk – not understanding that she smelt of alcohol because she was drenched with it, according to the victim. Assistance was reportedly refused and her plea for a lift home was also denied.
She returned home, deciding that she would attempt police-related help the following day – Sunday.
The very next morning she and her boyfriend had another altercation, which resulted in the woman calling the police. Once again seeking help.
Two police officers came to the house. One of the officers would turn out to be the next man to assault her.
He brought up the idea that she should go to a friend’s place to avoid staying in the house where the altercations took place. Trusting the officers, she left with them in a double cab van.
After a return to the precinct to get the forms necessary to lay charges against her boyfriend, the one officer offered to take her to a place of refuge – her friend’s home in Kraaifontein, adding that his co-officer could stay behind.
Near the Stellenbosch/Kuils River intersection, the policeman pulled over. This was where he reportedly raped her.
Allegations claim that he threatened to “kidnap her boyfriend and kill her” if she “tried anything funny,” pertaining to reporting the crime he had just committed.
The murder threat was also reiterated by EFF spokesperson in the Cape Metro, Andiswa Madikazi who said: “instead of driving to a safe location the officer drove to a different location where he raped her and then threatened to kill her if she goes public about it or reports him,” as per The South African.
Afraid, but not willing to let the story slip under the rug, the brave woman went back to the station to report everything, where she was referred to Ipid who took over her case.
At the scene of the violation, they collected evidence, including the papers he had used to wipe himself, allegedly the J-88 forms that were meant to lay the initial charges, according to Women For Change SA.
Friday morning saw the suspect arrested under Ipid’s design – after a short trip outside the province was made by the police officer.
The suspect was set to appear in court yesterday, January 17, however, this has been delayed to January 20 as the suspect had to go to the hospital.
