A dog owner in Surrey Estate is demanding justice after his 9-month-old female Pitbull, NayNay, was allegedly shot in the face by a South African Police Services (SAPS) officer during a violent raid at a relative’s home in Manenberg, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The dog’s owner insists that NayNay, who was simply barking, posed no threat to the officers during the incident, which took place this afternoon.
The shocking event has sparked outrage among local residents, with many taking to the streets in protest. The community is deeply disturbed by the level of police brutality displayed, particularly since the raid occurred in front of young children and unsuspecting bystanders.
NayNay’s owner, who values the dog as a beloved member of the family, strongly refutes claims that the dog was ever a danger. ‘No one was ever at risk of being bitten or attacked,’ he stated. ‘She’s just a puppy, and she was doing nothing more than barking.’
The police left the scene without providing any explanation or apology. In the aftermath, NayNay was rushed to the vet, suffering from severe pain and shock. According to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA), NayNay’s condition is critical. The dog has been hospitalized and will undergo surgery to remove her damaged eyeball.
‘We can confirm that the dog, who is in a lot of pain, has been hospitalized and will need invasive surgery to remove her shattered eyeball,’ said Allan Perrins, a spokesperson for AWS SA. ‘We’ve also removed a rubber bullet from her eye socket and provided strong pain relief. A full vet’s report will be provided to support the owner in his quest for justice.’
As NayNay recovers, her owner is considering legal action against SAPS for what he describes as a malicious and unjustified act of violence. The incident has sparked wider conversations about police conduct and the treatment of animals during law enforcement operations.
The local community continues to express their anger over the brutality displayed, urging authorities to hold the responsible officer accountable for their actions.
