Olympia Café and Bakery, shared the update in a Facebook post saying, ‘We may no longer allow dogs in the café or the café outside seating area,’ and adds that guide dogs and service dogs are exempt, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The change fits within South Africa’s national hygiene rules. Regulation R638 says an animal may not be ‘kept or permitted in a room or area where food is handled’, except for a guide or service dog accompanying a person with a disability.
The City of Cape Town’s certificate of acceptability page also lists an ‘Exemption: Dogs in Restaurants Notice‘, which points to a formal process for businesses that want to apply for relief under the food safety framework.
