At just after 2.30am this morning, the City’s Fire & Rescue Services responded to a dwelling alight in Bloukeur Street in Belville’s Blommendal neighbourhood.

Two fire engines, 12 staff members and a rescue vehicle responded to the scene. Upon arrival the officer in charge was notified that there were still two people inside the house, firefighting and search and rescue operations started immediately.

An elderly woman and a man were dragged from their burning home, but despite continued efforts to resuscitate the woman, she was declared deceased by paramedics. The man is still alive but is in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital for further care.

Another four patients were also taken to a hospital nearby, and the fire was successfully extinguished at 4.26am. The scene has been handed over to South African Police Services (SAPS) for further investigation.
