A young dental surgeon from Durban, Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo, was tragically killed in a car accident early Saturday morning in Cape Town, leaving her family and friends in mourning.
The 32-year-old, who was also an activist and filmmaker, was walking with her sister, Anelisa, when the fatal incident occurred on Buitengracht Street in the city centre, as News24 has reported.
The two were enjoying a walk when a red Ferrari sped toward them. According to Anelisa, the car’s tires screeched loudly before it struck a pedestrian behind them and continued its course, hitting Mdlokolo directly.
Mdlokolo suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene, while another pedestrian, whose identity has not been confirmed, was injured in the collision.
Anelisa described hearing the screeching of tires just moments before the tragic incident, as she shared her account with News24.
‘It hit someone behind us and then came straight for my sister,’ she said.
A public safety officer from the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), who happened to be nearby, quickly intervened and restrained the driver until police arrived.
The 36-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and later granted bail after appearing in court. Captain FC van Wyk from Cape Town Central police confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
The driver’s next court appearance is scheduled for 7 May 2025.
Cape Town’s CBD was rocked early this morning by a tragic accident involving multiple pedestrians on Buitengracht Street, near the intersection with Shortmarket Street, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The collision, which occurred at around 4:55am this morning, resulted in one fatality and left another pedestrian with serious injuries.
According to emergency services on the scene, the crash involved a Ferrari, which struck several pedestrians before coming to a halt. Authorities have closed off Buitengracht Street as they investigate the incident, with police and medical teams working to assist those affected.
One pedestrian was declared dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The road remains closed as investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area while emergency services manage the aftermath of the incident.
