Residents of Cape Town are warned to be cautious when buying or selling items via online marketplaces after an attempted hijacking on Wednesday.
This comes after six teenagers, aged between 15 and 17, were arrested by the Nyanga Crime Prevention Unit following an attempted robbery on Wednesday.

“The victim was delivering a system that was ordered on Facebook Marketplace in Sagolota Street, Brown’s Farm when he was met by six males who stoned the vehicle in an attempt to rob him,” said police spokesperson, Ndakhe Gwala.
“Police officers witnessed the ordeal and arrested the suspects and confiscated their cellular telephones.”
According to Gwala, the suspects had lured the victim to the said location, under the guise of being potential customers.
“Fifteen more conversations, with different unsuspecting victims were found on their cellular telephones.”

Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their court appearances in Athlone.
These arrests come as the city and law enforcement clamp down on crime on the Cape Flats.
Between 5 September and 2 October, Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers arrested 553 suspects.
Eleven were for the possession of an illegal firearm, 18 for the possession of illegal ammunition, 15 for the possession of an imitation firearm, 335 for the possession of drugs and 62 for the possession of dangerous weapons.
