OpenAI, the creator of the world-renowned ChatGPT, has just taken another bold step into the digital frontier with the launch of Atlas, an AI-powered web browser that promises to change how users interact with the internet.
As highlighted by Sky News, Atlas is designed to ‘feel very familiar’ to anyone who’s used Chrome, offering tabs, bookmarks, and even an incognito mode to keep your browsing private.
But under the hood, it’s far from an ordinary browser. Built directly around ChatGPT, Atlas allows users to interact with any webpage in real time; no more copying and pasting between tabs.
Adam Fry, who is OpenAI’s product lead, outlined that what makes it stand out is how seamlessly ChatGPT has been woven into the experience.
‘Atlas should feel very familiar, it has all of your tabs, bookmarks, autofill for passwords, all the things you’re used to,’ he stated.

Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Atlas as a browser with deep ChatGPT integration calling the technology ‘a rare, once-a-decade opportunity to rethink the browser.’
Rather than being a passive search tool, Atlas acts as a digital co-pilot. Picture this: you’re reading a long movie review and want the highlights, ChatGPT can summarise it instantly. Planning dinner? Atlas can help you find a recipe and order the ingredients online.
Ben Goodger, Atlas’s lead engineer, explained the team’s approach: ‘We wanted to make sure that Atlas didn’t feel like your old browser, just with a chat button that was bolted on.’ In other words, ChatGPT isn’t an add-on, it’s the backbone of the browsing experience.
This AI-driven agent isn’t just conversational, it can plan, research, and even book activities on your behalf. Those subscribed to OpenAI’s Plus and Pro packages will enjoy even deeper integration, unlocking advanced features that automate daily tasks.
Currently, Atlas is available worldwide for Mac users, including those on the free version of ChatGPT, with expansion to Windows, iOS, and Android soon, according to OpenAI.
The launch of Atlas signals a new chapter in the long-running browser wars. As noted by Sky News, it arrives at a time when Google faces scrutiny over its search dominance, after a U.S. court declared its search business an ‘illegal monopoly.’
Meanwhile, MyBroadband reported that Google’s shares fell nearly 5% following OpenAI’s announcement, a sign that investors are taking this new competitor seriously.
