Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams answered two call-outs on Lion’s Head on Friday, 2 January 2026, reports Cape {town} Etc.
A paraglider came down on the slopes near the Lion’s Head parking area, when a WSAR member and other rescue volunteers reached the injured pilot first and gave urgent care on the slope.
Paramedics found injuries that needed urgent treatment. The Western Cape EMS and Air Mercy Service helicopter hoisted the patient to a nearby landing zone. He was then moved to hospital by ambulance. Emergency services and City of Cape Town Traffic Services managed the scene and traffic.
This incident follows two recent crashes on the same mountain. SAHPA recorded a fatal crash on 25 November 2025 and a separate crash on 8 December 2025. Those events prompted extra caution and a call for careful flying.

Later the same afternoon rescuers returned to Lion’s Head to assist a 25-year-old hiker from Gauteng who felt faint and could not descend safely. Volunteers carried food and water, then escorted him down the trail. The second call-out ended in the early evening.
We thank the many agencies and volunteers who worked together quickly. For emergencies call 021 937 0300. To support WSAR, visit their pages for ways to help.
