A parent confronted a learner at Ebenezer Primary School in Paarl on Thursday, following allegations that the learner had bullied the parent’s child.
The incident, which has sparked significant discussion online, was captured in a video that is now circulating widely on social media.
In the video, educators can be seen attempting to diffuse the situation, with one staff member remarkong, ‘It’s a child, sir.’
It is further reported by KC 107.7 Community Radio Station that a separate school staff member, apparently recording the event, claims this is not the first time the parent has engaged in such behaviour, stating that he had previously hurt the same learner in a prior incident that was also filmed.
Following the unsettling occurrence, the parent took to social media to express his frustration, claiming his child had been subject to ongoing bullying without adequate response from the school.
According to Waar Brandit Inni Kaap, the Western Cape Education Department has since acknowledged the incident, with district officials, including psychosocial support staff, visiting the school to conduct an investigation and provide necessary counselling to affected parties.
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the parent was able to access the school grounds at the end of the school day, when learners were exiting, stating that educators were present at the gate during the incident.
As reported by Waar Brandit Inni Kaap, Hammond further elaborated that the school adhered to required protocols and referred the matter to the police.
In response to the event, the institution is currently reviewing its access control measures and has initiated discussions regarding the bullying allegations. Support services have been made available to assist those involved.
This incident follows on the heels of another violent event at Knysna High School, where a video surfaced of a pupil using racial slurs in an aggressive manner towards her classmates.
Such incidents highlight a broader concern regarding the safety and emotional well-being of students in South African schools, illuminating the need for effective interventions against bullying and violence.
