A parliamentary official allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at his workstation on the second floor of one of the legislature precincts.

It is understood that the reason the man committed suicide because he was informed that the national legislature would not be renewing his contract of employment.

Speaking to TimesLIVE, an official said that a single gunshot was heard before the screaming ensued during a staff meeting.

The second floor of the building, located at 90 Plein Street in Cape Town’s CBD, has been cordoned off. Police and emergency services are reportedly on scene.
