The family of slain university student Leigh Matthews has raised serious concerns after the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board recommended the release of her murderer, Donovan Moodley, on parole.
According to reporting by EWN, the board sat on Monday and recommended that Moodley, who has been serving a life sentence since 2005, be released.
Moodley was convicted of the 2004 abduction and murder of 21-year-old Leigh Matthews, a crime that shocked the country at the time. Despite multiple appearances before the parole board over the past two decades, Moodley has previously failed to secure early release.
This week’s recommendation marks a significant development, but it is not final, as the decision must still pass through the National Council for Correctional Services and, ultimately, the Minister of Justice, according to reports.
Leigh Matthews’s father, Rob, questioned the parole board’s decision, saying it relied only on Donovan Moodley’s short prison profile from Leeuwkop and ignored nearly two decades of his full history.
‘They didn’t have his profile for a period of some 18 and a half years, where there is a whole history of misdemeanour of threats and allegations,’ he stated.
The Matthews family also claims Moodley threatened them over the years, including allegations that he accused the family of organising hits on him while in prison.
