Eight passengers were seriously injured, and one man was killed on Friday night when a gang stabbed and threw them off a moving Metrorail train near Stellenbosch.

The train was en route from Lynedoch to Eerste River when a gang began terrorising passengers.

Police Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut, confirmed the incident. He said a 32-year-old man died during the robbery and 8 others were hurt.

It is alleged that the gang attacked and robbed passengers of their belongings, then stabbed them and threw them off the moving train.

A witness told News24 that only cellphones and R200 were taken from the terrified commuters.

Traut said cases of attempted murder and murder are being investigated, and no arrests have been made thus far.

It is unknown what was stolen during the robbery.
