A peaceful protest in Strand, Cape Town, attracted approximately 500 participants on Friday, who voiced their concerns about illegal immigration, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Organised by March and March, in collaboration with LACO Western Cape and various progressive organisations, the protest spotlighted the ongoing dialogues surrounding the presence of foreigners in South Africa, particularly in the Zola and Lwandle areas.
The march commenced at 11 am and concluded by 1 pm, urging both motorists and residents to exercise caution and seek alternative routes during this timeframe.
Despite heightened tensions surrounding similar issues in the region, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the demonstration remained peaceful, with no incidents of violence or property damage reported.
The SAPS stated that they were proactive in monitoring the situation and had stationed law enforcement agencies throughout the affected areas.
‘Lwandle SAPS is aware of the march based on the removal of illegal immigrants that took place in their policing area,’ police reported.
‘The march was peaceful with about 500 people participating in it, furthermore, no violence and damage to property happened during the march. SAPS and other law enforcement agencies will remain in the affected areas to monitor the situation and to respond to any eventuality that may arise,’
The protest comes in stark contrast to the recent unrest in Kraaifontein, where a march led by students from Masibambane and Hector Peterson High Schools descended into chaos just days prior.
The contrasting nature of these events highlights the complex socio-political landscape navigating issues of immigration and community tensions in South Africa.
LACO Western Cape and March and March have announced plans to gather at Goodwood Hall in Cape Town for a decisive action-oriented protest scheduled for Saturday.
