The natural response of pets in situations wherein they feel threatened is to flee from the noise.
The sensitivity of the hearing canals of most pets considerably worsens their response to the threat of loud noises.
A few of the consequences of fireworks displays for pets include disorientation, hiding in dangerous obstacles or running onto highways.
The SPCA has reminded pet owners of a few tips for protection as well as measures that may be implemented to safeguard against any furry friends being placed in danger.
- Do not condone the illegal use of fireworks, and contact the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement should you become aware of illegal firework usage.
- Ensure that your household pets have identification tags on them, such as a collar with a tag or a microchip through which they can be tracked.
- Establish an indoor safe space for pets, away from windows and doors.
- Mask the startling sounds by closing curtains, doors and windows and ensuring that the TV stays on.
- Feed household pets earlier and be sure to keep them inside throughout the evening.
- Walk dogs during the day, not the evening. This will help them feel calmer throughout the night.
- Ensure pets are distracted with either a treat, a new toy or a mild sedative, should it prove necessary.
- Try to remain close to your pets; this provides them with the comfort and reassurance needed throughout the night.
- Monitor and cater to the changing needs and behaviour of older pets.
Further tips include desensitising pets by gradually playing firework clips at a low volume in order for them to become acquainted with its sound and ultimately keeping them busy with entertaining distractions.
