Some petrol stations, more specially petrol attendants, have become alert to petrol theft following an increase in the number of motorists who drive off without paying after filling up.
Several incidents of petrol theft have been reported on social media following the recent fuel price hikes that have left motorists paying big bucks. This has forced petrol stations to come up with ways to mitigate these incidents in order to avoid going at a loss — by insisting motorist pay up before being served.
According to some petrol attendants, the culprits use a similar modus operandi: pulling up at the petrol station, asking for a full tank and then speeding off.
It is said in some cases the the fuel stations have been able to get their money back after tracking the cars with their registration number, while others have not been as lucky. In other instances, fuel station run at a loss.
Meanwhile, petrol attendants are being held responsible for the stolen fuel, which according to some who commented on social media, are paying from their salaries.
Because South African motorists are used to the fill-up-and-pay-after method, motorists are urged to exercise patience should they be faced with an early card swipe.
