As a deluge of rain continues to impact Cape Town, traffic officials are sounding the alarm over localised flooding affecting several key roadways in the metro, Cape {town} Etc reports.
With the afternoon peak approaching, road users are being urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution while travelling through affected areas.
Notably, the right lane of the M5 southbound has become submerged at Berkley Road, while the right lane of the N2 is obstructed at both Bhunga Avenue and further along at Dolphin Way.
Furthermore, Wetton Road is also significantly impacted, presenting serious challenges for commuters in the region.
City traffic spokesperson Kevin Jacobs highlighted that visibility is diminishing due to the worsening conditions, putting drivers at increased risk.
‘We urge all motorists to drive carefully and stay alert to the developing situation on our roads,’ Jacobs stated.
The flooding doesn’t stop there; numerous areas throughout the metro are grappling with waterlogging caused by the torrential downpour.
Significant locations experiencing flooding include:
- Breamway Nooitgedacht – reported flooding in this area.
- Dido Valley Road, Simonstown – caution is advised as water cascades downhill, leading to vehicles aquaplaning
- Athwood Road and Hanover Park Avenue – flooding present; approach with caution.
- Century Blvd Turnoff to N1 outbound, two vehicles.
- N2 outbound after Robert Sobukwe Road – the right lane is obstructed by flooding.
- Plantation Road by Suburban.
- Canal Road, Landsdowne/Ottery – heavy flooding reported, necessitating caution.
- N2 outbound after Bhunga Avenue – right lane obstructed; proceed with care.
- Wetton Road and Dolphin Way – both lanes are obstructed; exercise utmost caution.
- N1 outbound before N7 – approach to be cautious due to flooding.
- M3 inbound after Paradise Rd flooded. Left lane closed.
In light of these escalating hazards, officials encourage residents to report any road obstructions or incidents that may compromise public safety to the Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700.
