A young American sustained serious injuries when he fell approximately 20 metres while hiking up St James’ Peak with two friends on Tuesday.

The rescue bid took nearly an hour and a half after a Skymed helicopter was summoned to assist.

The American national had been hiking with two other Americans when the incident occurred.

“We responded to a call around 5.00pm that someone was seriously injured while hiking up St James’ Peak. The Skymed rescue helicopter, with a specialist trauma doctor and paramedic on board, landed near the injured hiker just after 5.30pm to provide him with assistance,” said Johan Marais, Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson, said to TimesLIVE.

The injured hiker was found unconscious near Peck’s Valley under St James’ Peak.

He was flown to Groote Schuur Hospital from there.
