According to Team South Africa, the 22-year-old stopped the clock in 24.18 seconds at Tollcross International Swimming Centre to set a new Commonwealth Games record. Team South Africa said Coetze had already lowered the Games record during the earlier rounds before producing his fastest swim in the final.

South Africa celebrated a one-three finish after Ruard van Renen secured bronze in 24.51 seconds. Team South Africa described the result as a major moment for the national swimming team, with both athletes standing on the podium after a dominant display.

The medals capped another encouraging session for Team SA. Erin Gallagher added silver in the women’s 50m butterfly, helping South Africa increase its medal tally as competition continues in Scotland. Team South Africa said the swimmers remain among the country’s strongest medal prospects for the rest of the Games.

Coetze’s latest victory adds another international milestone to his growing career, while Van Renen’s podium finish marks a breakthrough performance on one of the sport’s biggest stages. Team SA will return to the pool on Sunday looking to build on its strong momentum in Glasgow.
