As excitement mounts for the much-anticipated Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday, 8 March 2026, residents and visitors in various parts of the city are advised to prepare for significant road closures.
The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, the event organisers, are urging local residents in Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, and Sea Point including Victoria Road and Beach Road to avoid parking along Main Road.
Instead, they should consider alternative side roads or designated parking areas to facilitate smoother event logistics.
The provisional schedule for road closures begins on Thursday, 5 March 2026, and lasts until Sunday, 8 March 2026.
The closures will be extensive, impacting several key routes across the city as numerous cyclists take to the streets in this iconic race. The goal is to ensure the safety of riders and spectators alike.
On Thursday, 5 March and Friday, 6 March, significant closures will affect Green Point. Fritz Sonnenberg Road will be closed between Beach Road and Granger Bay Boulevard from 06h00 on Thursday until 21h00 on Sunday, providing local access only.
Additionally, on Friday, Vlei Road will be affected from Helen Suzman Boulevard to Fritz Sonnenberg Road.
More drastic traffic changes are set for the Cape Town CBD on Friday evening, where Castle Street will see closures from 19h00 to 06h00 on Saturday.
The situation intensifies on Saturday, 7 March, as multiple streets including sections of Castle Street, Darling Street, and Strand Street will be closed in the CBD from 14h00 until late Sunday afternoon.
Key thoroughfares such as Nelson Mandela Boulevard will also experience closures.
The closures extend beyond the city centre, affecting scenic routes like Chapman’s Peak Drive, which will close from 18h00 on Saturday to 18h00 on Sunday.
In the early hours on Sunday, extensive closures will commence as early as 04h00, covering roads such as Strand Street, Newmarket Street, and various others. Phillip Kgosana Drive (M3) outbound will not be accessible between 05h30 and 12h30, alongside Nelson Mandela Boulevard (N2).
Furthermore, a mix of street closures will take place in regions like Tokai and Lakeside, with Main Road closing between approximately 05h45 and 14h00.
Residents are especially encouraged to use sidestreets and alternative parking due to restrictions on several key roads in Bakoven, Camps Bay, Sea Point, and the CBD, effective from midnight on 7 March to 18h00 on 8 March.
