The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has advised that various parts of the Mother City will experience water supply disruptions this week as the team conducts planned work on its water supply infrastructure, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The following areas will be affected:
Maintenance work: pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant shutdown
- Monday, 9 June, from 12am to 12am on Tuesday, 10 June
The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will be shut down to allow for essential maintenance to be carried out.
The directorate is urging consumers in Kraaifontein, Bloekombos and Wallacedene to reduce their water consumption during this period. Residents should also note that the City’s reservoirs in the northern areas have been filled in advance.
Hanover Park, Athlone, Rylands, Newfields, Pinati Estate, Belthorn Estate, Penlyn Estate & Belgravia
- Weekdays from Monday 9 June, 9am to 5pm
The directorate will be conducting low-pressure investigations to improve the pressures in these areas. The project is expected to run for approximately five months. Residents in the affected areas are advised that intermittent water pressure disruptions may be experienced during this time.
Parts of Wynberg
- Tuesday, 10 June, from 8am to 8:30pm
The water supply to these areas will be shut off temporarily to enable the maintenance team to safely install valves and make connections to the existing water main at the intersections with Lindley and Bower Road.
The area bounded by Alphen Hill Road, Bower Road, Wellington Avenue, Bayview Road, Silverlea Road, Constantia Main Road and possibly the immediate surrounding streets will experience low water pressure or no water during this period.
Parts of Fish Hoek
- Tuesday, 10 June, from 8:30am to 8:30pm
The water supply to this area will be shut off temporarily to enable the maintenance team to install valves and make connections to the existing infrastructure in the area.
Residents in Harrington Street, Arthur Wright Road, Castleman Road, Carmichael Road and surrounding streets in Fish Hoek will experience no water or low water pressure during this time.
Paarden Eiland
- Friday, 13 June, from 6pm to 12am on Sunday, 15 June
The water supply to Paarden Eiland will be temporarily shut off to enable the maintenance team to safely replace a 915mm diameter bulk water meter at the Paarden Eiland Transfer Pump Station.
Some parts of Paarden Eilend will experience water at low pressure and other parts will experience no water during this period.
Oranjezicht Reservoir shutdown
- Monday, 16 June until Monday, 11 July
The Water and Sanitation Directorate will commence with its annual cleaning of the Oranjezicht Reservoir. Water supply will be rerouted from the Tygerberg Reservoir during this time.
What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions
The City says careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
However, maintenance work can sometimes be more complex than anticipated, resulting in longer-than-expected periods of water supply disruptions.
Additionally, all sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
The City advises that for a short period after the water supply is restored, the water may be discoloured or milky in appearance due to the presence of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand, the water will become clear in colour again.
How to prepare
Residents are encouraged to keep taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage, as well as store enough water in clean, sealed containers to last during this period.
