A 19-year-old woman is the latest suspect to have been arrested in connection to a mob attack that claimed the life of the late e-hailing driver, Anongile Mafalala. The teenager who is believed to have incited the attack on the late e-hailing driver now joins the five suspects who appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of murder, aggravated robbery and malicious damage to property.
This was after Mafalala was killed in a gruesome mob justice attack in Parkwood, Grassy Park a week ago. The man was beaten, robbed and set alight next to his Toyota Avanza after he accepted a trip request from two men in the area.
The court was advised that more arrests would be made. In their latest arrest, police have arrested the 19-year-old woman who was in her pajamas at the time. Police said she will be charged for murder as she is believed to have incited the attack on the victim and the widely spread video footage of his brutal death reported IOL.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed the arrest: “This office can confirm that a 19-year-old female was arrested on Tuesday June 7, and she was charged for murder and will make her first appearance today in Wynberg Court,” he said.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said the State considered the crime as a serious matter, and they plan to oppose bail. The suspects, Yuven Newt, Nathan Leeman, Ashwin Tifflon, Carlton Williams, and Bradley Murphy are expected to appear in court next on Monday.
