Western Cape police have detained two inmates who reportedly extorted a victim outside the prison to give them protection money every week, Cape {town} Etc reports.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the convicts also set up a bogus Facebook account and used the victim’s identity to sell things, but the customers never received them.
‘The two suspects, aged 23 and 24, were arrested by the provincial Organised Crime detectives and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday. They were remanded in custody,’ said Twigg.
Meanwhile, on Friday evening, Mitchell’s Plain police officers were conducting crime prevention operations in Beacon Valley, Mitchell’s Plain, when they detained a 41-year-old male who was in possession of a 7.65 pistol and ammunition. He is facing charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
In an unrelated incident, members of the Maitland Flying Squad stopped a suspicious-looking vehicle in Goodwood after receiving information about the occupants of a Ford Fiesta who were involved in street robberies in the region.
‘Upon searching the vehicle they found a 9mm pistol with ammunition inside the vehicle,’ Twigg explained. ‘Three suspects between 24 and 40 were arrested for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.’
Furthermore, the Delft Crime Prevention Unit apprehended an adult male after receiving information about a suspect wandering in Heuningbos Street, Roosendal, with a handgun in his possession.
‘They approached the suspect who matched the description, searched him, and discovered a 9mm weapon with ammunition in his possession. He was arrested for unlawfully possessing a pistol and ammo.’
Mitchell’s Plain police officers detained a 24-year-old man in Tafelsig after searching him on Karoopoort Street and discovering a 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammo.
The accused will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain, Goodwood, and Bellville Magistrates’ Courts today.
