A chaotic confrontation between police and residents in Heideveld has sparked outrage and debate after a video surfaced showing a Manenberg SAPS officer firing rubber bullets near bystanders, including children, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident, which took place on Saturday, 14 June 2025, has prompted Manenberg police to issue a firm defence of their actions, citing rising lawlessness and officer safety.
According to SAPS, officers were conducting a routine patrol along Lainsberg Road when they confronted a couple allegedly drinking in public with a baby present. While attempting to intervene, tensions escalated when a 48-year-old man reportedly charged at the officers, shouting threats and ignoring warnings to step back. He was subsequently arrested for interfering with police duties and allegedly attacking officers.
The video, widely shared on social media, shows the moment rubber bullets were discharged into the street, prompting screams from bystanders and criticism from community activists. SAPS insists the shots were a last resort, claiming the crowd had become increasingly aggressive and that officers were acting to prevent a larger outbreak of violence.
Captain Ian Bennett, spokesperson for Manenberg SAPS, condemned the rising trend of public interference during police operations. ‘Our officers face growing hostility, people throw stones, damage police vehicles, and obstruct arrests,’ he said.
The police statement further painted a picture of a community battling social decay, referencing a spike in illegal street parties, alcohol consumption in public spaces, and general disregard for law and order. Police say such conditions foster environments ripe for gang activity and gender-based violence.
Despite the police’s justification, the incident has sparked concern among residents, many of whom fear for their safety in already volatile areas. Community leaders have called for an urgent review of how law enforcement engages with residents, especially in crowded areas where children are present.
Meanwhile, SAPS maintains that their Crime Prevention Unit continues to patrol the streets daily, focusing on gang control and ensuring peace, though this latest incident has highlighted the fine line between public safety and aggressive policing.
