The Western Cape police are reeling from a tragic shooting incident that unfolded in the parking lot adjacent to the Gatesville Mosque in Athlone, claiming the life of a 35-year-old woman on Saturday, 3 May 2025.
The victim, identified as an administrative clerk with Kraaifontein SAPS, was shot at around 13:45pm on Saturday, leaving the community in shock and mourning, reports. Cape {town} Etc.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the shooting also left a 56-year-old woman seriously injured.
‘She was rushed to a medical facility for treatment, although further details about her condition have not been disclosed,’ Pojie said.
In the wake of the incident, Athlone police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder that will be investigated by detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit.
Preliminary reports indicate that the victim and her companion were targeted as they exited their vehicle, when two armed assailants confronted them.
‘We appeal to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or to anonymously reach out via the MySAPS mobile application,’ Pojie pleaded as he urged the public to assist in apprehending those responsible for this heinous act.
