Police have launched an investigation into the gruesome discovery of four charred bodies found near a railway line on Tuesday morning.

The bodies were discovered near the railway line on Vlei Street in Sweet Home Farm, an informal settlement located just east of the Cape Town CBD.

South African Police Services spokesperson FC Van Wyk confirmed that four counts of murder are currently being investigated.

Speaking to IOL, a neighbourhood watch member said that crime in the area had increased since September 2018.

The same member also urged the community not to take matters into their own hands, but to rather hand perpetrators over to the police to deal with.

IOL alleged that residents took the law into their own hands by setting four men alight who were accused of terrorising the community.

It is believed that the suspects are behind a string of recent murders, stabbings and house robberies in Samora Machel, an informal settlement that lies adjacent to Sweet Home Farm.

Van Wyk has urged members of the public who have information regarding the deaths of the four to contact the Samora Machel police on 102 380 3484 or 021 380 3490, or Crime Stop at 0860 10111.
