Police have launched a full investigation into a shooting incident in Samora Machel that claimed the lives of three young people and left a fourth injured on Saturday morning, 24 January.
The attack occurred shortly before midday, at about 11:55am, along Oliver Tambo Drive. According to police and Arrive Alive, the victims were seated inside a Suzuki Ertiga when unknown suspects approached the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Three victims, aged between 16 and 21, were declared dead at the scene. A fourth victim, a 19-year-old, sustained injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. At this stage, the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Detectives attached to the Serious and Violent Crime Unit have taken over the investigation, as Samora Machel police have opened three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
In the aftermath of the incident, police deployments in the area have been reinforced. Authorities say increased visibility and patrols are aimed at stabilising the community and maintaining law and order.
Police have reiterated their commitment to tracing those responsible and bringing them before court. Members of the public who may have information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to come forward.
