Residents are asked to keep an eye out for a suspect the South African Police Service (SAPS) believe was involved in the shooting of a Cape attorney earlier this month.

SAPS released a series of images in which the masked suspect wearing a Springbok supporters cap can be seen, as well as his silver/charcoal Hyundai H1 minibus. The suspect is wanted for the attempted murder of attorney Jakes van der Merwe, who was shot while in his car on February 12. Van der Merwe was admitted to hospital following the shooting, and the suspect fled the scene.

“The images were captured with surveillance cameras on the morning of 12 February 2020 close to the crime scene where a 53-year-old attorney was shot and wounded in Constantia Street, Gardens, Cape Town,” says Colonel Andrè Traut. “The suspect, who is a white male fired two shots at his victim from a seated position in his vehicle, wounding him in the neck. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a mask to disguise his identity and a Springboks supporter’s cap. We have reason to believe that the suspect was alone during the commission of the crime.”

If you recognise the suspect or the car, please contact Warrant Officer Shaun Bardien of Cape Town Central police on 082 469 3176 or 073 220 0653, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MYSAPS to relay the information.
