The Western Cape Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies and industry partners, executed a meticulously planned operation in Bellville on Thursday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The initiative led to the seizure of counterfeit clothing, footwear, and accessories, bearing the trademarks of prestigious international brands, with a staggering estimated value of R8 million.
The multidisciplinary team comprised members from numerous enforcement agencies, including the Western Cape Essential Infrastructure Task Team, the National Counterfeit Unit, Public Order Policing (POPS) Western Cape and Customs officials, alongside Brand Protectors.
Together, they targeted specific business premises where illicit goods were suspected to be sold, underscoring a united front against illegal trading practices.
Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the success of the operation, stating, ‘During the operation, a large consignment of counterfeit goods was seized. While no arrests were made at this time, our investigations are ongoing to trace the supply network and ascertain the origins of these counterfeit products.’

Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, praised the collaborative effort among various agencies, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of counterfeit trade.
‘The sale of counterfeit products not only undermines legitimate business operations but also deprives the state of essential revenue and fuels organised criminal networks,’ Patekile remarked.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit sales to their nearest police station or via the SAPS Crime Stop number, 08600 10111, contributing to a safer and more legitimate marketplace.
