As a precaution, the City of Cape Town has announced that a part of the popular Muizenberg Beach will be closed to the public until further notice.
This temporary closure is due to an electrical failure at the Clifton Road sewer pump station. The electrical failure results from a faulty ultrasonic device impacting the mouth of the Zandvlei estuary.
The issue at the pump station has since been resolved and is operating normally.
Various City departments have been activated to repair the faulty ultrasonic device and the electrical failure.
As a precaution, City Health advised that the beach sections between the Muizenberg Pavilion and Sunrise Beach be closed for the time being.
City Health will take water samples every day to test the water quality until the levels meet the minimum standards set by the National Water Quality Guidelines for recreational use.
Until then, residents and visitors are advised to avoid contact with the water.
Contact with the water could result in potential gastro-intestinal issues, and therefore, any person who enters the water does so at their own risk.
Health warning signage has been erected, advising the public of the situation, and further updates will be provided when the beach sections are reopened.
