‘This reopening marks the final phase in the full restoration of the Central Line, a critical public transport artery serving communities across the Western Cape,’ the agency said in a statement.
Transport planners expect the service in Kapteinsklip line to reduce travel costs and road congestion for daily commuters while safety and integrity tests continue on the corridor. Local groups have campaigned for rail restoration since services were suspended because of vandalism and infrastructure damage in 2020.
Metrorail Western Cape urged patience as the phased rollout continues and operational teams monitor performance during the first weeks of service.
