A South African woman’s holiday in Las Vegas ended unexpectedly when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained her at the airport shortly before she was due to return to Connecticut.
ENCA reports that Nqobile Malangeni was arrested on Friday, 31 July, at Harry Reid International Airport, according to her fiancé. She had been preparing to board a JetBlue flight after spending several days in Las Vegas celebrating her birthday.
Malangeni, who is reportedly about one month pregnant, was being held at the Henderson Detention Centre as of Wednesday, according to ICE records.
The case has left her fiancé worried about the future of their family.
Arrest happened at the airport
Video obtained by 8 News Now shows several ICE agents surrounding Malangeni as she waited to board her flight.
In the footage, an agent tells her that she had overstayed her visa and had a final order of removal.
Her fiancé said Malangeni had been living in the United States for about a year and a half. She had travelled to Las Vegas on July 27 to celebrate her birthday before planning to return to Connecticut.
The couple had also been making plans to marry and prepare for the arrival of their child.
Fiancé questions how the case unfolded
Malangeni’s fiancé, who asked not to be identified because of concerns about his safety, said he believes the situation could have been avoided if they had properly received and understood the removal notice.
He also highlighted his own connection to the United States, saying he enlisted in the US Army in 2013.
