Premier Winde reiterated, ‘South Africans are in for a difficult winter as extended rolling blackouts between stages 4 and 6 remain with us for the foreseeable future.’
Eskom’s management has warned of stage eight power outages this winter, which equates to about half a day without power.
According to the power utility, stage four power outages will last until 4pm on Friday, after which stage 5 will take effect. It has, however, promised some relief, with outages expected to be reduced over the weekend.
Premier Alan Winde has said that the government’s energy crisis contingency plan is stable, with all emergency services on standby if power outages worsen sooner than expected.
The premier said: ‘The Western Cape Government (WCG) has allocated significant resources to protect basic services, as far as possible, from persistent blackouts. As the WCG, we are working hard to ensure that despite the severity of the blackouts, residents have access to safe drinking water, sewage services and communications connectivity, that our hospitals and clinics are able to operate and that learning in our schools continues.’
He did, however, point out that there was no quick fix for this problem, and if there was, he is confident it would have been implemented by now. He explained that provinces need to mitigate the crisis as soon as possible with small, embedded generations.
