Pretoria Capitals produced a ruthless display with bat, ball and in the field to hand MI Cape Town a crushing 53-run defeat at a packed Centurion on Monday night in the SA20 2025–26 season, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The emphatic bonus-point win lifted the Capitals to 20 points and sent them to the top of the standings, pushing Sunrisers Eastern Cape down to second on 19, while the defending champions now find their playoff hopes hanging by a thread with only two matches left, both against Sunrisers.
Roared on by a sold-out crowd, Pretoria recovered from early trouble thanks to a destructive knock from Sherfane Rutherford, who blasted his maiden SA20 half-century with 53 off just 27 balls, dragging the home side to a competitive 185/6 after they had slipped to 89/4 with just over seven overs to go.
Rutherford’s late assault completely swung the momentum, especially as MI Cape Town’s discipline deserted them in the closing stages, with dropped catches and wayward death bowling allowing both Rutherford and Dewald Brevis to cash in heavily.
The pair stitched together a rapid 69-run stand from only 34 deliveries for the fifth wicket, a passage of play that left the visitors reeling, with Brevis lighting up Centurion by launching consecutive sixes off Kagiso Rabada, one a cheeky no-look flick and the next a one-handed blow over cover.

Rutherford was equally punishing, lining up Trent Boult during an expensive over that yielded 16 runs through two towering sixes and a boundary, before the West Indian fell off the final ball of the innings, caught at long-on after doing decisive damage.
That momentum carried straight into Pretoria’s bowling effort, where Gideon Peters ripped the heart out of MI Cape Town’s chase with a stunning double-wicket maiden that sparked a dramatic collapse.
From a relatively stable 46/2, MI Cape Town imploded to 55/6, losing four wickets for just 11 runs as Peters finished with 3/32, backed up by breathtaking work in the deep from Brevis, who pulled off two sensational boundary catches in quick succession.
The visitors never recovered, despite Reeza Hendricks fighting a lone battle with an unbeaten 68 from 50 balls, as MI Cape Town limped to 132/7.
With confidence soaring, the Capitals now turn their focus to their final fixtures against Paarl Royals at home and Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers, firmly in control of their SA20 title push.
